The fort Karnala was likely constructed in 1400 century, under Devagiri Yadavs and the Tughlaq rulers. The attempt was unsuccessful. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj conquered it from Portuguese. It was taken by Aurangzeb after his death. Mughals occupied it for some time after which with the rise of Peshwas of Pune it went to them. It remained under the command of killedar until East India Company won the fort. There is a reserved Bird Sanctuary. The presence of bee hives makes it difficult and different. There is a water cistern (tank) which provids fresh water all year long. There are some remains of fort like Entrance Arch, Grain Storage House, Pinnacle, Shiv-ling which now can be found in ruined condition.There is a temple dedicated to goddess Bhavani located at the bottom of the fort. From the top of the fort Prabalgad and Rajmachi are visible.
